At age 9, Bakhita was kidnapped near Darfur by slave traders and endured brutal and humiliating treatment until purchased by an Italian and taken to Venice where she would later become a nun. After her death in 1947, reports of miracles attributed to her began to come in and the cause for her elevation was started.
