Brendan was born in Ireland and was the Brother of st. Briga and friend of st. Columba. He was ordained in 512 and founded clonfert monastery. It is said that the rule at the monastery was dictated to Brendan by an angel. Brendan is the patron of boatmen, mariners, sailors, travelers and whales.
