St Clare was the daughter of a count and countess but ran away to a religious profession after hearing St. Francis preach in the streets. She founded the order of Poor Clares at San Damiano and led it for 40 years. Clares Mother and sisters joined the order later in life and today there are still thousands of members living lives of prayer and silence. Patroness of embroiderers, eye disease, eyes, gilders, goldsmiths, gold workers, television, telephones.
