A Friar’s Tale; Remembering Fr. Benedict Groeschel

Founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, Fr. Groeschel, 1933-2014, was one of the most well-known and beloved Catholics our day. Whether he was helping homeless pregnant women, troubled youth, or leading his religious order in prayer, this beautiful soul touched so many people. For May’s Catholic Book of the Month we review “A Friar’s Tale”

Baptized Robert Peter Groeschel, Fr. Benedict was a Jersey City boy. He grew up with his many brothers and sisters in the 30’s and 40’s around hard-working folk of Irish, European and Jewish backgrounds, many of them immigrants. He fondly recalls his parents’ simple yet profound Catholic faith and how it influenced him.

Things to know about this holy priest:

  • He was close friends with Mother Angelica, foundress of EWTN (Eternal World Television Network). And Mother Teresa, foundress of the Missionaries of Charity, who will be canonized this Fall!
  • Was chaplain of Children’s Village, a place for emotionally disturbed youth.
  • Founded Counsel Homes for homeless pregnant women.
  • He founded his religious order in response to St. Pope John Paul II’s call for renewal within religious communities!

Among the many things this man of God did, he was also a powerful voice and activist. First for the civil rights movement,  how the Catholic Church was portrayed in the media and popular culture. Most recently, he was a strident defender of the inherent goodness of the Catholic priesthood, even among the accusations of clergy abuse.
